«S&T for Global development: are we tackling the right issues?»

Aim:

The aim of the workshop is to mobilize relevant stakeholders with a view toward reinforcing international coordination and cooperation in «Knowledge for Development» by focusing on Science & Technology's role in the fulfilment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG).

The main themes of the workshop are:

  • the role of knowledge as a tool for good governance and evidence-based policy;
  • the importance of refocusing agricultural policies in the current environment of rising raw-material and food prices.
  • the role of global public goods and good statistics.
  • linkages between regional integration and mutual knowledge in the context of the Community of Portuguese-speaking countries (CPLP).

Scope:

The workshop's output is expected to contribute toward governance responses that are able to foster increased scientific-capacity building and trust-based and mutually accountable cooperation, as required by the United Nation's objective of a «Global Partnership for Development».

Attendees:

Participants are drawn from a wide range of institutions, scientific fields and geographical areas, special focus on:

  • Academics;
  • Policy-makers and public administrators;
  • Businessmen and private sector managers;
  • Social and market research practitioners.

Representative organizations include the World Bank, Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research, Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, Community of Portuguese-speaking countries, state laboratories and other research institutions in Portuguese speaking countries, amongst others.
